This term we are learning about the Olympics. Stay tuned for our Olympic challenge. Who will win gold...
This term we are learning about Space and the Solar System.
Matariki

Phases of the Moon
This week we have been learning about the moon and the different phases that it goes through. Did you know there are 8 different types of moon and it depends on the sun's light which one we see. We thought this was an amazing fact. To help us learn the names of the moons and what they look like from Earth we used Oreos. Have a look at the fun we had.
PLANETS AND THEIR DISTANCE FROM THE SUN
Today we measured each planets distance from the sun. We used toilet paper as our measuring tool, then drew a line with chalk. We learnt that the first three planets are very close together and Mercury must be very hot. For those of us that were on Neptune, we decided it would be freezing as it was so far away.
Mrs Mackenzie introduced our new learning topic to us, by giving us a lot of statements about space. We had to work together to decide if these statements were true or false. Each new statement provided a lot of discussion, some of them we knew already and some statements we were not sure about. From these statements, we created our own questions, that we would like to find out. We wrote these as "Our Wonderings. As we travel through our inquiry, we are hoping to be able to answer these questions. By the end of this topic, we are also hoping to be able to confidently answer all the statements Mrs Mackenzie gave us.
We have been busy learning about Anzac day and the Gallipoli campaign. We have read a number of Anzac picture books to gain a better understanding of what happened. We were lucky enough to see Mrs Mackenzie's photos of the Dawn Service at Gallipoli last year.
Today we made Anzac biscuits with Room 9 and 4.

Green Week
This week our theme is GREEN! We are celebrating all things green.
We have learnt about the Green Isle- Ireland and all things that come from there. First we tried to Irish dance. At first we all thought it would be easy... then we watched a video, tried it ourselves and realised it's a lot harder than it looks and sounds.

On Friday, we celebrated by having a "Green Day". Unfortunately those cheeky leprechauns evaded us. The
only thing that we caught were golden chocolate coins and eggs. Those pesky leprechauns tricked us!!!

In reading, we learnt that if we caught one they had to tell us where their gold was hidden as this is leprechaun law. We also learnt about tiny little leprechauns and how they like to play tricks on people. So we decided to make some leprechaun traps. On Friday afternoon our buddy class Room 4 and Room 2 came to visit and look at our traps. They thought we had done a great job and were excited about us catching some leprechauns.
Have a look at our photos, do you think they will catch those pesky leprechauns...?

Colour Wheel Snowflakes
We are learning about the colour wheel and how to create all the different colours on a colour wheel. First we watched a video about the colour wheel, and then we used water paints and painted on the three primary colours. We then mixed our colours together to make secondary and tertiary colours.
As our colour wheels were drying we discussed positive and negative space, symmetry, and balance. We folded up our colour wheels into fractions (in half, in half again) we decide it looked a bit like a slice of pizza. Using our scissors to take “bites” out of art we created snowflakes. Our finished designs were then glued onto black paper to highlight the negative spaces.

The Meanies
Meanies all do mean things, meanies all do mean things, meanies all do mean things. That's what meanies do.
Joy Cowley has written lots of stories about meanies and how they behave. We read her stories and listen to the video below. We then decided that we wanted to be "Nice-ies" and came up with our own warm fuzzies and class rules that "Nice-ies" show.
No David!
In our class, we are working towards being a "Peacemaker" not a "Peacebreaker". We decided on the characteristics that make a Peacebreaker- like David, from David Shannon’s book "David Goes to School". We then talked about the characteristics we would like to see in our classroom and how we could be Peacemakers. We have written stories about when we were a Peacemaker.
We Are All Different
We have been getting to know our new class mates. We have learnt that we are so different. We like different things and we learn differently. On our boy and girl cut outs we have shown what we like and how we learn.
Magnificent Me!
Today we wrote poems introducing ourselves....Magnificent Me! They look really cool and describe things we like, can do and some of our special qualities.
We published them and they are hanging up in inside our classroom. Come in and check them out!
