The Seven Fishes
We read the Maori myth "The Star Fishes" which is just one of the many legends about the seven stars of Matariki. We acted out the story and then we retold the story in our own words. We also created our own illustrations to go with the myth.
One day a mother fish said to her baby fish, stay away from the open sea. The giant Tataraimaka was going to be fishing. Tataraimaka had a magic net made out of flax that grew at Spirits Bay.
The baby fish did not listen to their mother and they were having so much fun playing tag, they forgot about their mother's warning. Suddenly Tataraimaka net came down and caught them. The seven fish began to cry and cry. They cried so many tears they made the sea salty. Tane, the God of Light, felt sorry for the fish, so he threw the net up into the sky. Then the fish turned into seven beautiful stars, known as Matariki.

Once we got used to writing simple sentences correctly, we went on to write compound and complex sentences. First we learnt about compound sentences, they have two ideas joined together using and, or, so and but. We watched the catchy movie "Conjunction Junction" then tried writing our own compound sentences.
We then wrote some "I wish" stories. Our writing goal was to add more detail to our writing, so our reader had a lot of information about our ideas. We had to make sure we used a conjunction to explain our ideas for our readers.
